This is a charcoal pencil - it's just like a stick of charcoal, but it doesn't snap as easily, and you won't get your fingers dirty!

=====
Draw with it as you would a pencil.
It makes thick marks.
====
It smudges easily, so be careful...
====
...the good thing about charcoal is it gives an atmospheric effect to sketches.
====
When the pencil wears down, just sharpen it like you would an ordinary pencil.
====
You can use your finger to smudge the charcoal to create shading.
====
Now Neil's picking out some highlights on his picture of horses with the tip of a white chalk...
====
...followed by dots around the feet.
It looks like the horses are charging through the water!
====
Here you can see he's using the sharp edge of the chalk to represent spray on the picture
====
And the chalk on its side is great for creating the surface of the water!
====
A hazy moon and its reflection completes the picture!
Try it yourself!
